architectural

This renovation and extension project restores the original charm of the longère while introducing a contemporary edge to the internal living spaces.
Cement-based renders were removed to allow the building to breathe naturally and to reveal the stonework.

The extension establishes a contemporary dialogue with the existing building. While echoing the proportions of the longère, it adopts a deliberately contrasting material palette: burnt accoya cladding and black standing-seam zinc roofing.
The decision to use burnt timber was inspired by the oyster huts found along the coast, whose façades are darkened by tar or marine coatings.
To maintain a clear and legible massing, the existing longère and the main extension volume are separated by a flat-roofed link element.
The internal finishes within the the extension are executed carefully arranged birch-faced plywood.

The windows of the extension are made in black steel reflecting the form of the timber windows of the longère.

technical

The timber framed extension is insulated with a breathable, ecological, bio-sourced material composed of hemp, cotton and linen.
The stone walls of the longère are insulated internally with 6 cm of hemp insulation finished with lime render. This approach regulates the natural movement of moisture through the masonry while significantly improving the thermal performance of the existing envelope.

Heating and hot water are provided by an air-source heat pump supplying underfloor heating embedded in a polished concrete slab.
