This project involves the complete remodelling of an existing Breton longère, incorporating a timber-frame extension that wraps around the south and east façades. Clad in chestnut with a standing seam zinc roof, the extension serves multiple functions:
- Filling the Longère with Light: A bay-style window protrudes from the façade, featuring full-height glazing from built-in seating to ceiling, offering expansive views across the garden. The overhanging zinc roof allows low winter sun to enter, while shading the interior from the high summer sun.
- Respectful contemporary addition: By framing the extensive opening of the main façade within a contemporary “wrap,” the extension preserves the character of the original stone building while enhancing it with a sensitive, modern intervention.
- Sheltered exterior spaces: The overhanging roof also creates a covered entrance and terrace area, providing protection during the sometimes humid Breton seasons.
Inside, the central entrance extends to full height beneath the sloping ceiling, accommodating a steel staircase and gallery walkway. The largely open-plan ground floor is partially subdivided by birch-faced plywood bookshelves, creating a cozy living area arranged around a wood-burning stove and seamlessly connecting to the built-in birch seating within the extension.
The south façade is finished with a lime-hemp render, preserving the breathability of the stone wall while maintaining the character and subtle undulations of the original surface.
The polished concrete floor doubles as the emitter for underfloor heating, supplied by an air-source heat pump.
